Goin in for Him
I'm Akira. Somedays I feel dope. Other days I feel like a mess, but I always know I'm covered by grace. God created me this way for a reason and I'm learning to be comfortable in the skin I'm in.

To combat domestic violence, MOSAIC was developed as a free anonymous online tool that can help assess if you or someone you know is in a dangerous relationship. Please share this with someone in your life who needs it. Let’s change the conversation surrounding Ray Rice to one that helps victims of abuse instead of blaming them.

A silent protest in Love Park, downtown Philadelphia orchestrated by performance artists protesting the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson. The onslaught of passerby’s  wanting to take photos with the statue exemplifies the disconnect in American society.  Simply frame out the dead body, and it doesn’t exist.

Here are some observations by one of the artists involved in the event:

I don’t know who any of these folks are.

    They were tourists I presume.

But I heard most of what everything they said. A few lines in particular stood out. There’s one guy not featured in the photos. His friends were trying to get him to join the picture but he couldn’t take his eyes off the body.

"Something about this doesn’t feel right. I’m going to sit this one out, guys." "Com’on man… he’s already dead."

There were a billion little quips I heard today. Some broke my heart. Some restored my faith in humanity. There was an older white couple who wanted to take a picture under the statue.

The older gentleman: “Why do they have to always have to shove their politics down our throats.” Older woman: “They’re black kids, honey. They don’t have anything better to do.”

One woman even stepped over the body to get her picture. But as luck would have it the wind blew the caution tape and it got tangle around her foot. She had to stop and take the tape off. She still took her photo.

There was a guy who yelled at us… “We need more dead like them. Yay for the white man!”

"One young guy just cried and then gave me a hug and said ‘thank you. It’s nice to know SOMEBODY sees me.’

    Today’s thoughts.

  • I’m tired, heavy hearted, sad, angry, and ready for change. I’m tired of having to justify our right to life.

  • Sad..

    • While standing in line at Starbucks I'm reading the news reports about Mike Brown. As a look around, I become very aware that I'm the only black person in here. AsI shake my head andI read about injustice, this old lady standing behind me can't help but to keep looking over my shoulder to see what I'm doing. I finally make eye contact with her:
    • Her- Did you hear about Robin Williams. That's so sad.
    • Me- Yea. I loved him when I was a kid. Did you hear about Mike Brown? That was terrible.
    • Her- Oh, I think I heard something about that. Didn't he try to kill a policeman?
    • Me- No, he had his hands up when he was shot.
    • Her- Oh... Well wasn't he a gangbanger?
    • Me- *Blank stare and awkward silence*... You have a good day...
    • Some people will never understand...

  • Dear Future Husband,

I don’t want us to be those parents who never act romantic in front of their children. I want our kids to learn how to really love somebody because we lead by example. So kiss me in the kitchen while I’m pouring cereal, cuddle with me on the couch during family movie night, and hold my hand while we grocery shop.

Let’s show them what true love looks like, so when they find it for themselves they’ll never let it go.
